What is a dental dam?

You can learn about condoms in sex ed. classes, but how often do they talk about dental dams?

Dental dams are thin squares or rectangles of latex that are used for oral sex involving a vulva, vagina or anus. Originally used in dental procedures, they've become a life-saving STD-prevention device as using them to cover genitals while performing oral sex will keep away vaginal and anal fluids that may contain bacteria or viruses.

If you're not fluid-bonded* with your partner, then it's a smart & safe idea to use protection while performing oral sex. Flavoured condoms have been around for a while and flavoured dental dams perform the same job (plus they taste nicer than, say, cling wrap).

* The term fluid-bonded refers to people who have agreed to have unprotected sex with each other (and have take appropriate precautions such as being tested regularly for all STDs, discussing contraceptives if required and have open communication about sexual matters).
